Nationally recognized, award-winning artist John Costanza was educated and trained at Temple University-Tyler School of Art and the Art Students League in New York.  He was a professor at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia and was the Chairman of the Ceramics Department.  Over the span of five decades, John has exhibited in more than 30 one-person shows and 35 two-person shows at venues such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition, the New York Worlds Fair, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Delaware Museum of Art.  John’s works have also been placed in a number of public and private collections.

Creative drive:
“I believe creativity is not determined by the medium an artist selects, but rather by what is done with the materials the artist masters. Each piece I build has to me its own integrity and character which must be deliberated over and scrutinized carefully before I can call it complete.”

Key emotion represented in work:
"My forms vary from organic shapes to cubes with spiky surfaces.  My series, Emergence, Terpsichore, and Ball upon Ball, all in some way represent a birthing or coming into existence, completeness."

Thoughts on your process:
"Part of what I do is to explore, invent and experiment with simple shapes using the cube, cylinder, or rectangle.  The surface of the forms are generally finished with ceramic oxides, glazes, or polychromed lacquer, and some are fused with metal, glass, or stone fragments."

Personal relationship with your work:
"I am a sculptor and a painter.  I am competent and confident in both mediums.  Art is the best way for me to express myself."

“It is important to share art because it is always a good thing to inspire and be inspired.”
