John Maurer

Born in Denver, Colorado in 1965, John Maurer currently lives seasonally in Bristol, CT and St. Petersburg, FL.  He has an Associate in Arts degree from the Art Institute of Atlanta, 1986 and was a commercial artist from 1987-1998.  He began painting full time in 1998 with a move to New Orleans and worked as a street artist exhibiting in Jackson Square for a year...a life altering experience!

Creative drive:
“Being in a new environment and seeing something that captures my attention.  Most often it is a landscape or architectural subject and involves unusual lighting, a patch of color or just interesting shapes but, more recently I have been drawn to apint figures, especially after visiting Spain and seeing some vibrant Flamenco performances.  I also like to paint while thinking of other artists who inspire me... ”

"Freedom and spontaneity...enjoying life and attempting to capture a moment of it."

What is unique about your process:

"I paint mostly with palette knives and rely on a variety of textures and plenty of pigment to achieve what I’m after.  A simple yet challenging approach."

Personal relationship with your work:
"It is an absolute necessity.  I would be quite an unhappy and unfulfilled person if I wasn’t able to create on a regular basis.  I don’t consider myself very good with words but with pigment, I feel uninhibited and excited about self expression."

Thoughts on sharing art:
"Observing someone caught smiling as they are viewing my work brings a great sense of pleasure to me...and I think that art is of vital importance in people’s lives.  Some don’t know that it touches them until they feel it."
