Born into an artistic family, Rebekah Brooks was given a world of natural inspiration and had a fascination with jewelry making from a young age. Beginning her studies at the Massachusetts College of Art, Brooks then continued and finished her schooling at the Pratt Institute in New York with a degree in sculpture. Upon completing school, Brooks worked
as an artist assistant for Kiki Smith, Ted Meuhling and Jessica Rose.
Brooks then made a move in early 2000 to launch her own jewelry designs introducing a truly unique vision. Almost every aspect of her jewelry is made by hand including her clasps and findings. She hand selects each bead or stone with precision searching for the perfect opacity, color and iridescence.
Creative drive:
“My drive to create reflects mainly on nature. Nature has a pattern, but is slightly irregular. In this same way, an object made by hand is one of a kind. I look to the pattern, architecture and colors of the natural world for inspiration. Adornment from other cultures, fabrics, vintage fashions, and the beauty of women have influenced me as a designer."
Key emotion represented in her work:
“The longevity of a design is very important to me. So much of what is created today is manufactured and the attention to detail seems lost. Making handmade jewelry keeps an age old art alive.”
Thoughts on sharing art:
“When the jewelry I design is complete, it begins its own journey into the world. It is purchased, given and worn. My hope is that it may be passed down to other generations allowing each piece to create its own history.”
