"I also hope to spread the idea that one person’s trash is almost always another person’s treasure."

View Kathy's Work

Kathy has lived in Wilmington, Delaware for the past 15 years with her husband David Paul and two children, Jesse and Emma.

Kathy has been making jewelry for as long as she can remember.  Growing up in Pittsburgh she would on a weekly basis go to a local bead store to look for treasures to incorporate into her work. Her actual first jewelry business endeavor, as a teenager, was making wearable pieces using fishing lures as the foundation.

After graduating from the George School in Bucks County, PA, Kathy attended the University of Colorado in Boulder.  She majored in environmental science and minored in photography.  For 25 years she worked in the environmental non-profit world concentrating on recycling and waste reduction and water pollution prevention.  Throughout her adult life she continued to make and sell jewelry and to take classes to learn different skills including metal smithing, enameling, PMC Clay, and various beading techniques.

One of Kathy's other favorite things to do is to go looking for vintage treasures.  She has always loved old things and has a special draw to anything with a floral-design theme.   After leaving a full-time job as an executive director of a regional environmental organization two years ago, Kathy had the opportunity to spend more time travelling across the region in search of found objects.  This passion led to her starting a small antique business and to the collecting and incorporating of vintage pieces into the jewelry that shedesigns.

Creative drive:
What currently drives me to create is my love for jewelry and the idea of taking something old and making it new again.  I find the textures and colors of vintage jewelry to be inspirational from a design perspective.  In addition, as someone who has worked to improve environmental quality for most of my life, the idea of reusing something that someone else no longer wants really resonates with me and makes sense."

Key emotion represented in work:
"The key emotions that my work represents are a bit of nostalgia with a pop of playfulness and surprise."

What is unique about your process:

"What is unique about my process is the ability to take something old and to make it new and current."

Personal relationship with your work:
"Personally my work combines my love of adornment, jewelry and old stuff with an environmentally responsible twist."

Thoughts on sharing art:
"Art stimulates our emotions and for me personally, often triggers memories of experiences I have had in my life that have stuck with me for one reason or another.  I am hopeful that by sharing the jewelry that I create with others that it will bring joy and some connection to the past.  I also hope to spread the idea that one person’s trash is almost always another person’s treasure."
