“I strive to connect with the viewer through color, line, composition, or sometimes just one little element that pulls the viewer in, in a compelling, wonderful way."

Mary Ann Weselyk is a self-taught artist who grew up and currently resides in Unionville, PA. Practicing professionally since 1989, Mary Ann was initially influenced by the popular, local style of Wyeth, but with her appreciation and study of the Masters, including Picasso, Matisse, and Van Gogh, Mary Ann has evolved her traditional influences to an interpretational style of still life that is filled with whimsy, personality, and a delight in seeing her subject matter in different ways.

Mary Ann’s creative drive:

"I believe in God. And I believe that I’ve been blessed with the gift of seeing an ultimately beautiful world. I don’t want to leave this world without leaving the better part of me behind. I want my work to live on. I want it to initiate goose bumps. I want it to be magical.”

Key emotion represented in her work:

“I strive to connect with the viewer through color, line, composition, or sometimes just one little element that pulls the viewer in, in a compelling, wonderful way. I want to create a painting that makes you feel so good you want to be in the painting.”

Thoughts on process:

"It’s very important to me to strive for perfection, to create paintings that feel positive and uplifting, and to never paint the same thing twice. I also seek freedom in my process: I want my subject matter and mood to dictate the technique, tools, and style of a painting.”

Personal relationship to her work:

"There’s so much beauty in the world that we don’t see. I’m very passionate about that. I’m an optimist and believe that life can be horrifying, but I know that you can’t lose sight that it’s a beautiful world with beautiful people who do beautiful things. I’d rather focus on that truth than use my painting to take a political viewpoint or stand.”

Thoughts on sharing art:

"When I create something that brings me joy, it isn’t something I can put into words or describe. It’s the way your mind attaches to your hand when you’re interpreting what’s inside you as the artist. It has a profound identity of its own. And I believe that if I make myself happy with a painting, it will make others happy.”
